Could this be Rodimus Prime?

I hope not, not after the stunt he pulled lol! I wouldn't like to think that the matrix would choose an idiot!!! Anyway, didn't the decepticons steal the matrix? He can't become Prime without the matrix

With all the big changes going on, one might not need a matrix to be a prime.

Isn't this Don's reimagined Hot Rod? He looks no different to his recent appearances in the Ongoing so I doubt he's been rebuilt as Rodimus Prime. The change is more in Hot Rod's mind as he's reinvented himself as Rodimus the alternative leader. This should be a popular incentive cover.

With all the big changes going on, one might not need a matrix to be a prime. Maybe not, but Bumblebee states to Ultra Magnus in Ongoing 6 that until they find the matrix and it chooses someone, he is in charge.

Maybe not, but Bumblebee states to Ultra Magnus in Ongoing 6 that until they find the matrix and it chooses someone, he is in charge. Hot Rod overheard that conversation and it was my impression from that that Hot Rod has decided to head off into space to find the Decepticons and reclaim the Matrix for the Autobots, at which point the Matrix may recognise him as the natural successor in the Prime line.

That would be very brave (or very stupid!). Typical Hot Rod. I suppose it would be nice to find out what the decepticons plan on doing with the matrix. Obviously, Starscream is saying that it's a source of power, but I don't think Megatron had that in mind.....

One of the things that has kept me hanging onto the ongoing series has been the brilliance of Mike Costa's story-telling and his characterization of the main personalities.
Ultra Magnus, Swindle and Thundercracker have been handled excellently, and so has Hot Rod!
'Hot-Headed' always acting first and thinking later, he typically got impatient at doing nothing, rebelled against authority and took matters into his own hands, which tragically resulted in the death of a friend (sound familiar so far! original animated movie!)
However even tho Hot Rod is 'Hot-Headed' he does have some endearing qualities. He's always ready to see the brighter more positive side of people and doesn't usually take offense or hold grudges for long. Trying to team up with the decepticons was definately naive (another trait of Hot Rod's) but was done with be best of intentions (as he states to Ultra Magnus when accused of collaboration with the enemy "it wasn't like that" - he really believed in making a new start!) It also showed Hot Rod's ability to see beyond stereo-types and be the first to reach out to others and show trust and willing to resolve difficult problems - real character traits of a true leader in the making!
At the moment tho his 'good intentions' have been largely unappeciated and his reputation is in tatters with everyone thinking him a traitor, collaborator, desserter and general 'coward'.
Having a great moral conscience tho and an overwhelming need to put right the mistakes he makes, Hot Rod knows the only way to redeem himself is to pull of something spectacular - namely - the return of the Matrix to Prime - something which as zedebo pointed out he overheard Magnus and BB arguing about!
So my moneys on Hot Rod going on a 'Matrix Quest' (maybe he'll even be the next up to get a mini-series) and im loving Costa's insightful characterisation of each transformer and how he's skillfully working with and around awful past continuity and tying up the terrible AHM saga.

I agree that he is taking on the responsibility of writing and tying up the story threads very well, but I have felt that the first few issues could have been written with a bit more pace, as i think most people are getting a bit fed up at the pace. I dont mind a story starting slow and building up, after all this was always a trait of Simon Furman's stories, and hopefully now that this story has gathered pace, it will start revealing a few things. I get the feeling, however, that now that it has built up, we are switching to the decepticons which will slow done again!

I also got the impression that Hotrod was going to look for the matrix, which i assume is still onboard that vessel with the recovering Megatron and his decepticons. I'm pretty sure that cover up top is just Hotrod and not Rodimus Prime.

Not only that but Starscream is wearing the Matrix like a medalion, ala Galvatron in the original movie. So he'll have to fight Screamer for it! I reckon that would be worth seeing.
